Trojans Finish Season With 1-0 Win Over Newberry

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University men's soccer team wrapped up the 2022 regular season with a 1-0 victory over the Newberry College Wolves at Spero Financial Field on Wednesday (Oct. 26).

Anderson and Newberry both entered the match with a 4-7-3 overall record, and a 2-5-3 clip in the South Atlantic Conference. It was a competitive first half of play as both teams possessed well, creating opportunities in the attacking third. Newberry outshot Anderson eight to six, however Trojans goalkeeper Amos Uber came up big with five saves to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.

Newberry kept their foot on the gas in the second half, earning five corner kicks as they continued to apply pressure on the Anderson defensive back line of Mariano Carpena, Nick DeFazio, Tiago Perez, and Joao Martinho. In the 77th minute, the Trojans were awarded a free kick on Newberry's side of the field. Andres Osorio took the set piece, and launched a cross into the box, finding the head of Mariano Carpena whose header gave the Trojans the 1-0 lead. Anderson's defense held strong the remainder of the match, fueling the victory.

The Trojans conclude the year with a record of 5-7-3 (3-5-3 in SAC) while going 4-4-2 in their final 10 games of the season. This year's senior class includes Ben Lemen, Caleb Daniels, Philip Siegwald, Martin Carpena Elian Munoz, and Joao Martinho.
