Trojans Notch First Win of 2022 With 1-0 Victory Over Mount Olive

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson University men's soccer team notched their first win of the 2022 season by defeating the University of Mount Olive Trojans 1-0 on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 3). Anderson opened the season last weekend against two teams from the Sunshine State Conference: No.3 Nova Southeastern and Barry University.

On an overcast Saturday, it was a battle between the Trojans in Anderson and Mount Olive. Both teams were trying to feel each other out early in the first half as the game remained scoreless. With eight minutes remaining, lightning was detected in the area which caused a 30-minute delay.

As play started back, Anderson started to find their rhythm offensively. At the 55th minute mark, Yani Diagne played a beautiful through ball to forward Diego Jaramillo who found the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

The defensive back line of Tiago Perez, Joao Martinho, Ben Lemen, and Caleb McDowall were stellar in the match, helping lead Anderson to the clean sheet victory. Goalkeeper Amos Uber finished the match with three saves.

"After a tough opening weekend, I am happy for the team to earn their first win of the season," said coach Michael Zion. "The guys have been working hard throughout the week to improve in areas that we thought needed attention and we were better. Although we have a long way to go, we are moving forward together."

The Trojans will be back in action on Wednesday (Sept. 7) when they travel to Wingate, N.C. to start the South Atlantic Conference campaign against the Bulldogs. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m., with video available on Flo Sports.
