Five-Run Sixth Inning Lifts Third-Seeded Carson-Newman Past Trojans in SAC Baseball Tournament

KODAK, Tenn. – The eighth-seeded Anderson University baseball team was held to six hits on the afternoon, as No. 3 seed Carson-Newman used a five-run sixth inning to fuel a 6-1 win over the Trojans at the 2018 Pilot/Flying J South Atlantic Conference Baseball Championship, Saturday afternoon at Smokies Stadium.

Anderson slipped to 24-28 with just its fifth setback in 15 decisions and its first of the double-elimination tournament. The Trojans will face the loser of the Tusculum/Lincoln Memorial contest, which is the final game on today's tourney slate. Carson Newman improved to 28-21 and will square off against top-seeded Catawba on Sunday at 3:45 p.m.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Redshirt freshman Chandler Castleberry was a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon, with a home run and also reached on a walk. Senior Tyler Miller and sophomores Dillon Carpenter and Matthew Overton each added a single.

Senior Andrew Dill slipped to 2-5 on the season after allowing three runs on four hits in five innings of work on the mound. He fanned two batters and walked two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Carson-Newman opened the scoring with a solo run in the top of the first inning, while Castleberry clubbed his team-leading 16th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning to knot the score at 1-1.

But the Eagles posted five runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead, while the Trojans were held to three hits the rest of the way.

STAT OF THE GAME
Senior right-hander Matthew Reitz did not allow a hit or walk a batter, while striking out a pair of Eagles in two full innings of relief.

NOTABLES
Tyler Miller extended his hitting streak to 15 games.
Matthew Overton has reached base safely in seven straight games.
• Castleberry now owns the school record for home runs in a season.
