ANDERSON, S.C. - Brevard sophomore Cody Queen's eighth-inning one-out homer over the left field fence proved to be the difference, as the Anderson baseball team opened its final South Atlantic Conference homestand with a 6-5 setback to the Tornados Friday night at Anderson Memorial Stadium.

Anderson slipped to 13-29 overall and 6-16 in the conference with its second loss in the last three games, while Brevard (13-28, 8-14 SAC) snapped a seven-game skid with the victory.

Freshman Chris Ayers was 2-for-3 on the night with a double and a run-scoring single, while driving in a run and scoring once. Senior Tony Price added a pair of singles and an RBI and also crossed the plate once. Freshman Steven Cooper was 2-for-4 with a triple and scored once. He also added a first-inning walk. Sophomore Nathan Galliford tripled in the second inning and junior Paul Como recorded his third home run of the season in the fourth inning.

Anderson sophomore right-hander Michael Skelly (0-1) suffered the loss for the Trojans in his seventh relief appearance of the season. He struck out one, while walking one in an inning of work and surrendered the home run to Queen. Brevard freshman left-hander James Phillips earned the win with five innings of relief. He struck out two, while walking a pair of batters and did not give up a run.

The Tornados claimed a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a pair of runs on two hits, with Queen recording both RBI.

The Trojans countered with a run in the bottom of the frame, as Galliford led off with his second triple of the season and crossed the plate on Ayers' single up the middle.

Brevard capitalized on a pair of Trojan errors in the fourth inning to increase its lead to 3-1, but AU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to garner a 4-3 advantage. Como lifted his one-out home run over the left-field fence for the first score, and Ayers followed with a double to right-center. Two batters later, Price singled up the middle to bring home Ayers and Cash plated Price with another single up the middle.

The Trojans added a run in the fifth when Cooper's line drive found the gap in right-center and went to the wall, as he ended up at third to lead off for AU. Senior Erick Sanderson recorded the RBI by ripping a single to center to score Cooper and push the lead to 5-3. But Phillips entered the contest with Sanderson and Como on base and limited the Trojans to just two hits over the final four innings.

A pair of Trojan miscues led to a pair of Brevard runs in the seventh, as the Tornados evened the score at five apiece, setting up Queen's eighth-inning heroics.

The Trojans and Tornados wrap up their three-game series with a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium. With a sweep of the twin bill, Anderson would win its third weekend conference series in the last four weeks.
