NEWBERRY, S.C. - Newberry College capitalized on four errors to defeat Anderson, 9-4, in South Atlantic Conference baseball action as the Trojans opened a three-game series Friday night at the Smith Road Complex.

Anderson fell to 10-27 overall and 4-15 in the league with its fifth setback in the last six outings, while Newberry (21-15, 9-8 SAC) won its third straight contest and its sixth of the last eight.

Junior catcher Jonathan Zalud was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Trojans and drove in a pair of runs with a seventh-inning double - his third of the season. Fellow junior Paul Como also added a two-run double and scored once.

Sophomore JT Trujillo (2-5) suffered the loss, while surrendering six runs (three earned) over four innings of work. He struck out three and walked two. Sophomore Jonathan Rosenberger (7-0) earned the win for the Wolves after scattering four hits over seven full innings. The right-hander struck out seven and walked two,

The Wolves scored in each of the first four innings, taking advantage of three AU miscues to build a 6-0 lead after four innings. Newberry added another run in the bottom of the sixth before the Trojan bats woke up in the top of the seventh frame.

Freshman Steven Cooper earned a one-out walk and two batters later, sophomore Nathan Galliford also drew a walk. Como then ripped his team-leading 10th double of the season to score both Cooper and Galliford. Freshman Chris Ayers singled and Zalud added his double to right-center, plating Como and Ayers to trim the deficit to 7-4.

But Newberry countered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to set the final score.

Anderson and Newberry will conclude the three-game set with a doubleheader on Saturday. First-pitch versus the Wolves is scheduled for 1 p.m.
