NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College women's tennis team played their first home match of the season Saturday but lost to Anderson, 8-1. Newberry's lone win came from Autise Mortimer (Nassau, Bahamas) who played fantastic in a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Anderson's Marcela Gailegas. Mortimer earned the team's first singles win of the season and is now 1-1. In other singles play, Julie Halbert defeated Rebekah Crouch (Saluda, S.C.) (6-0, 6-0); Shelby Anderson defeated Kelly Cheesborough (Harlem, Ga.) (6-1, 6-0); Laura Gorman defeated Allison Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) (6-2, 6-0); Milena Goncalves defeated Lindsey Kyzer (Saluda, S.C.) (6-0, 6-0); and Lisa Gorman defeated Denise Williams (Blackville, S.C.) (6-0, 6-0). Newberry doubles action, Halbert and Gailegas defeated Mortimer and Crouch, 8-4; Anderson and Laura Gorman defeated the Kyzer sisters, 8-0; and Goncalves and Lisa Gorman defeated Cheesborough and Williams, 8-0.
