Trojans Drop Nonconference Road Contest At Columbus State; 64-61

COLUMBUS, GA. – Anderson University women's basketball (2-3) committed a season high 25 turnovers in its nonconference road loss at Columbus State (3-1) on Tuesday evening at the Lumpkin Center.

"Not the result we wanted, but I thought we played one of our best games yet," said head coach Jonathon Barbaree. "The momentum is building with this team and I see it every day. Players are starting to see the potential and are figuring it out."
As for the ending of this game, poor coaching on my part," added Barbaree. "I should have used my timeouts better and put players in better situations." 

Despite shooting its highest field goal percentage of the season, the Trojans came up just short on a hard-fought road contest. The Black and Gold were 27-of-62 from the field (43.5%), including hitting 5-of-12 (41.7%) from behind the arc. Anderson also outrebounded Columbus State 44-to-37.

Anderson won the opening two quarters of play, taking a 27-22 halftime lead. The Cougars bounced back in the third and fourth quarter, claiming an eight-point second half victory to pull out the overall three-point win.

AU lead by three points after Bailey made a layup with 1:36 remaining, 61-58. However, the Cougars responded back with back-to-back layups with just under a minute to go to grab the final lead change of the game, 62-61. Columbus State was able to extend the lead to three-points after making two foul shots with four seconds to go which proved to the final difference in the game, 64-61.

The Trojans placed two players in the double figure scoring with freshman Ashlyn Sheridan scoring a career high 11 points and pulling down a career high eight rebounds. Senior Jalyn Spurlin netted 10 points while dishing out three assists and being credited with two steals.

Columbus State placed three players in double figure scoring with Simone Lett and Olonna Rawls both scoring a game-high 13 points apiece. Guard Amber Abusbeih chipped in 11 points while recording four steals on the evening.

The Trojans continue its road swing when it travels to nonconference opponent Southern Wesleyan on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
