Softball Day - A Glimpse Back at the 2020 Season

Anderson, S.C. - Anderson University head softball coach Tommy Hewitt's (15th season) Trojans dropped four of its first seven contest before running off an impressive 13 straight games, including a doubleheader sweep of then top-seeded South Atlantic Conference opponent Lincoln Memorial. The win streak was the Black and Gold's longest, since the 2015-16 season.

Anderson won six games during the fourth week of the season, sweeping the SAC AstroTurf Player and Pitcher of the Week honors. Sophomore Kayson Boatner helped lead the Trojans to wins over Lincoln Memorial, Chowan and Lees-McRae. Overall, the Fortson, GA. native, hit a .435 batting average, going 10-for-23 at the plate while hitting six home runs, including 19 RBI. On the week Boatner scored 11 times while posting a remarkable 1.348 slugging average.

Junior Kayla Pepper took a huge part in the Trojans 6-0 record with a one hitter verses Chowan while also throwing three complete games. Overall, Pepper went 22 innings allowing just 24 hits and striking out 23 batters in that span.

Senior Meghan Majeski was batting a team second best .369. For the shortened season, Majeski swiped 10 bases which ranked 3rd in the SAC. For her career, Majeski stole 76 bases which ranks second on AU's all-time steal list, just eight shy of taking over the top slot. Majeski also ranks 6th all-time with most career runs scored (127) and tied for 10th in career batting average (.333).

Senior Mattie Hamilton drove in 25 RBI ranking tied for fourth in the SAC and second on the team. Hamilton posted a .328 batting average with five doubles and four home runs to her credit.

Hamilton ranks in multiple AU career records in the following categories… RBI (5th-152), Runs Scored (7th-123), Slugging % (7th - .613), Total Bases (9th – 295), Home Runs (6th – 30), Doubles (T-7th – 38) and Batting Average (8th - .339).

Pepper earned eight wins in the circle, pitching a team leading 62 innings. Pepper pitched nine complete games while striking out 72 batters. The southpaw from Anderson, S.C. ranked third in the SAC in wins and sixth in the SAC with a 1.81 earned run average.

In just two and a half seasons, Pepper ranks in several AU career records. Pepper ranks second in career earned run average (2.26), strike outs (4th – 335), wins (t-4th – 35) and innings pitched (8th – 362.1)
