Softball Earns Second Seed; Named One of Two Host Sites for NCAA Southeast Region Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Anderson University softball team has been seeded second in the NCAA's Southeast Region and will face seventh-seeded Georgia College on Friday, as announced by the NCAA selection Committee Monday morning.

Anderson (42-10), along with North Georgia, are the top two teams in the region rankings, with each hosting half of the eight-team field for the Southeast Region, with the Trojans squaring off against the Bobcats (34-15) at 4:30 p.m. at Smethers Field.

Armstrong Atlantic (30-12), ranked 19th nationally and the No. 3 seed, will open the Anderson regional by facing sixth-seeded and 25th-ranked USC Aiken (32-14) at 2 p.m. at Smethers Field on Friday.

After capturing a share of the South Atlantic Conference regular-season title and the league's tournament crown, Friday's contest will mark the second consecutive appearance by the Trojans in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship. Entering the tournament, Anderson has already set a new school for wins in a season for the second time in as many seasons. AU will square off against the Bobcats, who entered the Peach Belt Conference Tournament as the fourth seed before falling, 6-4, to Flagler in the tourney quarterfinals in mid-April.

The Trojans and Bobcats have met on just five occasions in school history, with Anderson defeating the Bobcats three times last season. AU swept the regular-season doubleheader in Milledgeville, Ga., then knocked off GC, 7-5, in the NCAA's Hickory Regional. Anderson and GC split a twin bill at Smethers Field earlier this season.

The other half of the double elimination event features top-seeded and nationally fourth-ranked North Georgia (43-9) playing host to eighth-seeded Mount Olive (24-24) in Dahlonega, Ga., while fourth-seeded Wingate (36-18) faces fifth-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne (39-13).

The two winners will advance to a two-out-of-three Super Regional, slated for May 16-17. The winner of the Super Regional will join the other Super Regional winners in the NCAA National Finals, scheduled to be held May 22-26 in Salem, Va.

Tickets are $5.00 each day for adults, $3.00 for seniors and students with proper identification, and $2.00 for children 12 and under (cash or check only).
