Men’s Cross Country Places Seventh at Eye Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Anderson University men's cross country team opened the 2011 campaign with a strong seventh-place finish while battling a field that included eight Division I teams at USC Upstate's 28th Annual Eye Opener Friday evening at the Roger Milliken Research Park.

The Trojans, who finished eighth in the event a year ago, covered the 8k distance in first place among the D-II teams competing and also outdistanced College of Charleston, Wofford College and Presbyterian.

A pair of sophomores, Deniz Hay (27:08) and Parks Edwards (27:09), paced the Trojans effort, crossing the finish line in 26th and 27th, respectively. Hay's effort was nearly a minute faster than a year ago at the Eye Opener.

Junior Alex Pena (28:00) posted a 48th-place finish, while junior Matt Shaffer (28:16) and newcomer Joshua Visi-Clark (28:18) finished 55th and 56th.

The Trojans are back on the course Friday, Sept. 16, at the Clemson Invitational.
