CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Behind a second-half scoring outburst and a stellar defensive effort, the 15th-ranked Anderson women's basketball team maintained its two-game lead in the South Atlantic Conference standings by rolling past Queens University of Charlotte, 73-53, Wednesday night at the Levine Center.
Anderson (14-3, 12-2 SAC), which swept the season series with the Royals and claimed its second straight win after snapping a two-game skid over the weekend, erupted for 25 points in the decisive third quarter. Queens fell to 3-16 overall and 1-13 in the conference with its third straight loss.
Senior guard Madison Floyd led the Trojans with 20 points and
five assists, while senior forward Jennifer Monroe notched her
eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high
14 rebounds. Junior guard Heather Jankowy added 11 points and
dished out four assists.
The Trojans dominated the rebounding battle, 47-31, while pulling
down 23 offensive boards that resulted in 16 points. AU also shot
39.1 percent from the field, while Queens posted a 38.9 percent
shooting percentage.
The first half featured two ties and six lead changes, with the Trojans overcoming a 16-14 deficit with an 11-3 outburst that was sparked when Jankowy sank a 3-pointer at the 8:34 mark of the second quarter. With the Trojans holding the five-point advantage, Queens countered with an 8-2 run of their own to climb within 27-26 at halftime.
Jankowy and Floyd combined for five straight points to open the decisive third quarter, as Anderson posted a 13-4 run and built a double-digit, 41-30, advantage with 5:12 left in the frame and went on to claim the 20-point victory.
Anderson will get back on the hardwood Wednesday, when the
Trojans welcome Tusculum to the Electric City. Tip-off versus the
Pioneers is slated for 6 p.m.
