Trojans Stay Hot at Home, Beat Newberry 5-2

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson men's tennis (8-7, 3-6 SAC) were victorious 5-2 against the Newberry Wolves (4-11, 3-6 SAC) in a windy contest on Wednesday afternoon. The win was AU's third straight at the Trojan Tennis Complex.

The Black and Gold started play off on the right foot, taking the doubles point. Junior Mathis Collignon and freshman Sky Thavornchaisophon breezed to a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles. After a Newberry victory on court 1, the point would be decided at No. 2. Junior Patrick Cronin and freshman Vicent Mico closed out a 6-4 win, capping off the set by winning a deuce game at 5-4.

With the Trojans leading 1-0, singles play began. Mico was the first Trojan off court, notching his third straight singles win, and tenth of the season, by a 6-2, 6-1 score.

Newberry cut the AU lead to 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2, before the Trojans answered back with a pair of wins. Collignon grinded his way through a tight 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 4, before Thavornchaisophon breezed by his opponent, 6-2, 6-2.

The Wolves added a second point in a three-set match at the No. 6 spot. Sophomore Hampton Goldman bookended the day by prevailing in a back-and-forth duel at No. 5 singles, 10-6 in the match tiebreaker.

"We had to play smart today, playing in the wind," said Trojan freshman Sky Thavornchaisophon. "This match was very important for our chances to make the conference tournament. That made me hungry to get the win. It was a great win for us today!"

UP NEXT

The Trojans travel to Bristol, Tennessee for a neutral-site match with Emory & Henry on Saturday, April 6th. The Ida Jones Tennis Center will host the match at 11:00 a.m.
