Trojans Can't Stave of Late Run; Drop 12-10 Decision to Newberry

ANDERSON, S.C. – Sophomore Gray Wells (Chapin, S.C.) record four RBIs while sophomore Mac Ketchin (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) tallied a trio in the contest, but the Anderson University (11-14, 4-11 SAC) baseball team found themselves on the unfavorable side of a 12-10 decision to Newberry College (10-16, 6-6 SAC) on Sunday, March 17.

Wells picked up his four RBIs on two hits in the contest while Ketchin was 3-for-5 at the dish. Junior Brandon Gibbs (Columbia, S.C.) recorded a pair of RBIs on the day as well. Senior Carlos Hernandez (Maracay, Venezuela) was consistent at the plate as well on the day, going 3-for-4 with a walk as well. The Trojans used eight different pitchers in the contest.

After Newberry opened the contest with a trio of runs in the top of the first inning, the Trojans were able to respond with the next seven runs in the contest, plating four in the second and three in the third. An RBI-single by Gibbs started the scoring for the Black and Gold before Ketchin knocked a bases clearing triple to right center field with two outs in the second, giving Anderson their first lead of the game, 4-3.

Wells brought around a pair of runs with a two RBI-double in the third, with Gibbs recording another RBI in the inning with a double to center field, extending the Trojans advantage to 7-3. However, the Wolves were able to claw back into the contest, scoring two runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to swing the lead back to the top line of the scoreboard with a 10-7 lead. Wells added two more runs for the Trojans in the bottom of the seventh off a two-run shot over the right field fence and then added another run in the eighth on a bunt single to tie the contest at ten.

However, the Wolves posted a pair of runs in the top of the ninth and the Trojans weren't able to move a runner past first base in the bottom of the frame following a lead-off walk with Newberry taking the 12-10 win.

Anderson returns to Memorial Stadium on Tuesday, March 19 as they hosted Southern Wesleyan for a non-conference matchup at 5:00 p.m.
