Trojans Defend Home Court in 5-2 Win Over Mars Hill

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson men's tennis (6-6, 2-5 SAC) won its second straight home match at the Trojan Tennis Complex on Monday afternoon. Although Mars Hill (1-9, 1-5 SAC) was victorious in doubles, the Black and Gold came back strong in singles.

Mars Hill took the opening doubles point, and led 1-0 heading into singles play. AU's Patrick Cronin and Vicent Mico notched a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot after the point had been secured by the Lions.

Down 1-0, the Trojans responded emphatically in singles. Mico was first off court at No. 1, winning 6-1, 6-3. He was followed by sophomore Hampton Goldman and fellow freshman Sky Thavornchaisophon, who each added straight-set victories of their own.

Following a Mars Hill win at No. 2 singles, junior Patrick Cronin closed out the team match for AU. The Lexington, S.C. native secured a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6, clinching the match in the process.

Junior Mathis Collignon added to the Trojans' total following Cronin's victory, coming back to take a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 decision at the No. 4 spot.

COACH'S CORNER

"The guys won a good match today against a tough Mars Hill team," said AU Head Coach Joey Eskridge. "Mars Hill always plays really well against us. We lost the doubles point, but came back to win 5 of the 6 singles matches. It was a good team effort today. We just have to keep getting better."

UP NEXT

The Trojans go back on the road for two in-state midweek matches. Wednesday afternoon, the team will take on Limestone in Gaffney, before traveling to Columbia to tangle with Columbia College on Thursday.
