Trojans Battle Past Wasps, 5-2

Trojans Battle Past Wasps, 5-2

BRISTOL, TENN. – Anderson men's tennis (9-7, 4-6 SAC) earned their first road win of the spring on Saturday afternoon. The 5-2 victory over SAC foe Emory & Henry was the Trojans' fourth in conference play, vaulting AU to seventh in the conference standings.

The Trojans started off strong, taking two of the three doubles matches. Patrick Cronin and Vicent Mico team for a 6-1 at No. 2, and added a sixth match to their win streak. After the Wasps took court one, AU's No. 3 team of Mathis Collignon and Sky Thavornchaisophon came up clutch, breaking Emory & Henry's team on a deuce point to take a 5-3 lead. The pair then held, clinching the opening point of the match for the Trojans.

Singles began just as well for AU. Cronin was first off court, notching a 6-1, 7-5 victory at No. 6. He was followed by Collignon at No. 4, who earned his third straight singles win in a tight 6-4, 6-4 match.

Emory & Henry was able to get on the board, defeating Trojan Joao Mendes in a 7-6(4), 7-6(6) match that could have gone either way.

The next pair of matches off went AU's way in convincing fashion. Thavornchaisophon raced to a 6-2, 6-1 win, clinching the team match. Hampton Goldman was next, winning his court without dropping a game. The final singles match was another tight one, going the Wasps' way in a third set tiebreaker at No. 1.

QUOTABLE

"It was a great team win for the guys today," said Trojan sophomore Hampton Goldman. "Everyone came out ready to leave everything out on the court. Getting the doubles point on courts 2 and 3 helped build momentum for singles. In singles everyone stayed focused throughout the tough moments of the match which helped us pull through! This was a good win to get prepared for Monday when we play Wingate."
