Maxwell’s No-Hitter Backed By Timely Hitting Help Trojans To Doubleheader Sweep Against Newberry

 

ANDERSON, S.C.– Reigning South Atlantic Conference pitcher of the week tossed a no-hit shutout to help lead Anderson University softball (22-12, 11-1 SAC) to a game one win over SAC opponent Newberry (18-18, 6-8 SAC), 16-0 (5) while stepping in game two to pick up her second win of the day on a walk-off hit by senior Ava Worthy to take down the Wolves, 4-3, in game two on Saturday afternoon at the AU Softball Complex.

Game One

  • The Trojans collected nine hits which included a double and three home runs. Senior Hannah Whitaker hit her 10th home run of the season which is tied for second in the SAC. Senior Ava Worthy drilled her seventh home run of the season while junior Maggie Nauck hit her second.
  • Anderson exploded for 10 runs in the second inning and six runs in the fourth.
  • Senior Laken Maxwell (12-5) pitch 5.0 innings giving up no hits while striking out four. 

Game Two

  • Newberry outhit the Trojans 10-8.
  • The Wolves led, 2-0, through 4.5 innings of play with Whitaker's 2-out double scoring two Trojans to tie the game up at, 2-2.
  • Both Newberry and Anderson scored solo runs in the sixth inning to kept the game knotted at three apiece.
  • Back-to back walks and a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh set the stage for AU's Worthy to knock in the game-winning run on a single to deep center.
  • Freshman Kadence Barrick continues to swing a hot bat going 2-for-2 on the day in a pinch hitter role. Barrick collected two RBI for the Black and Gold.
  • Graduate Morgen Baker-Celis pitched four innings giving up seven hits while striking out four. Sophomore Carson Hobbs came on in relief and pitched two innings giving up one hit while striking out one. Maxwell (13-5) entered to pitch the final inning. Maxwell earned her 13th win of the season after being the pitcher on record in the Trojans come from behind victory.  

 Next Up

Anderson will travel to SAC foe Carson-Newman on Thursday. First-pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 pm.
