ANDERSON, S.C. - With three players reaching double figures, the league-leading Anderson women's basketball team stretched its South Atlantic Conference regular-season win streak to 26 games by edging Wingate, 89-87, Saturday afternoon at the Abney Athletic Center.
Anderson led the entire game and improved to 12-1 overall and 10-0 in league action and has not dropped a regular-season SAC decision since falling to Catawba more than a year ago at the Abney Center. Wingate (9-5, 6-4 SAC) suffered its second straight setback after having its six-game win streak snapped three nights ago at Catawba.
AU's fast start enabled the Black and Gold to post its highest scoring total since tallying 94 points in a home win over Mars Hill almost exactly a year ago. The Trojans held a 35-34 rebounding edge, with the Bulldogs pulling down 15 offensive boards on the afternoon. The Trojans offset a decisive Wingate scoring advantage in the paint by shooting 51.7 percent from the field.
Anderson junior guard Heather Jankowy equaled her career-high
with a game-best 23 points, including 15 in the decisive second
half. The Walhalla, S.C., native also dished out a game-high seven
assists and grabbed five rebounds. Senior forward Jennifer Monroe
notched her sixth double-double with 20 points and a game-high 11
rebounds, while junior forward Alexis Dillard tallied 17 points,
four rebounds and three blocked shots. Freshman guard Tamia Eatmon
came off the bench to hand out five assists in 20 minutes of
action.
Wingate freshman guard Courtney Robinson had a career-high 22
points, with Bulldog senior forward Morgan McGee adding 13 points.
Junior forward Kristina Rumplasch chipped in 12 points, with junior
guard Alex Tomlinson netting 10 points.
The Trojans scored the first eight points of the game, including five in the opening 49 seconds, as AU jumped out to a 13-4 lead less than four minutes into the opening quarter. Dillard netted five of her points and a pair of offensive rebounds in the opening 3:18, with the Trojans claiming their first double-digit lead, at 20-8, on a 3-pointer from Jankowy with more than four minutes left in the first quarter.
But the visitors countered with a 16-6 surge that stretched into the second quarter and saw Wingate trim AU's cushion to just 30-24 with 8:27 left before halftime. With the Trojans still holding a six-point lead and less than seven minutes left, Monroe posted a traditional three-point play and Jankowy followed a Wingate basket with anther trey to rebuild AU's lead back to a double-digit, 40-30, advantage.
The Bulldogs again responded with a 13-4 run to cut the Trojan
lead to just 44-43 before Jankowy drained a runner in lane to set
the 46-43 halftime score.
A pair of traditional three-point plays and a 3-pointer helped the
Trojans jump out to a 59-46 lead less than four minutes into the
third quarter, but Wingate chipped away and climbed within 72-67
with eight minutes left in the game. A jumper from Dillard and
three points from Jankowy over the next 1:20 quickly pushed AU's
lead back to 10, but the Bulldogs whittled the deficit to 85-82
with less than a minute left in the contest.
Jankowy and junior guard Nakia Young each sandwiched a pair of free throws around a jumper by McGee to give AU an 89-84 lead before WU's Alix Tomlinson connected on a 3-pointer just seconds before the final buzzer.
Anderson wraps up its two-game homestand by welcoming
Carson-Newman to the Abney Center on Wednesday. Tip-off versus the
Eagles is scheduled for 6 p.m.
