Trojans Push Bulldogs to Limit in Game Three; Drop Doubleheader to Wingate on Sunday

WINGATE, N.C. – Pushing the final game of the series to extra innings, the Anderson University (11-10, 4-8 SAC) baseball team was unable to swing the score back to their favor as they dropped a doubleheader to the Bulldogs of Wingate University (14-7, 7-2 SAC) on the road on Sunday, March 10.

Four different Trojans recorded an RBI on the day with senior Carlos Hernandez (Maracay, Venezuela), senior Kevin Sosa (Deltona, Fla.), senior Kye Andress (Hendersonville, N.C.) and junior Wesley Mann (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) tallying the stats.

GAME ONE: Wingate 12, Anderson 2 (7 Innings)

Wingate was able to jump out to the lead in the contest as they were able to post a trio of runs in the first and another trio in the third to take the 6-0 lead after three complete innings. The fourth inning was the first time the Trojans were able to get a runner on the base paths, and it would pay off for them as after a pair of defensive miscues, back-to-back singles by the Black and Gold brought around their first run of the night, making it a 6-1 ballgame. However, the Bulldogs tacked on an additional five runs to their tally in the bottom of the fourth to bring their advantage to 11-1.

A solo shot from Sosa in the top of the fifth brought the Trojans a run closer, but that's as close as they would get as Wingate added a run in the sixth and shut the Trojans out the rest of the way earn the 12-2 shortened game victory.

GAME TWO: Wingate 5, Anderson 4 (9 Innings)

In a game that was scheduled for just seven innings, the Trojans were able to push the envelope all the way into extra innings, thanks to a great start offensively, putting up three runs in the third while adding an additional run to their tally in the fourth. Wingate responded in kind with the same score division, just an inning removed, as they posted three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth.

That tie continued into the eighth inning where neither team was able to make headway, before Wingate wrapped up the contest with a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the ninth to take the 5-4 win.

Anderson returns to action on Tuesday, March 12 as they travel to Dahlonega, Ga. to take on the Nighthawks of North Georgia. First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
