Trojans Drop Road Conference Decision to Coker, 9-2

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Hitting the road for their first road league action of the year, the Anderson University (6-5, 1-3 SAC) baseball team dropped a 9-2 decision to Coker (8-4, 4-0 SAC) on Saturday, February 24.

Sophomore Mac Ketchin (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) posted a pair of hits on the day to lead the squad while also tallying one of the two RBIs for the Trojans in the contest. Sophomore Gray Wells (Chpain, S.C.) was able to record the other RBI while also drawing a pair of walks. Junior Luke Poole (Greenwood, S.C.), freshman Zach Stover (Powdersville, S.C.), senior Brayden Owens (Easley, S.C.) and senior JC LeGrand (Lugoff, S.C.) were each able to record a hit in the game as well. Graduate Nathan Sanders (Franklin, N.C.) was the best performer on the mound for the Trojans, tossing two and one-third innings while striking out a trio of Cobras.

A lead-off single by Ketchin saw the Trojans on the basepath early, and a wild pitch and passed ball would move him to just 90 feet away from scoring the opening run of the contest. He did just that on the next better as Wells blasted a shot to deep right-field that was caught by the fielder but gave Ketchin the green light to trot the final distance and give Anderson the 1-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Trojan faithful that lead evaporated quickly as a two-run shot from Coker in the bottom of the second saw the lead change to the bottom half of the scoreboard while they added another run in the frame to take the 3-1 lead after two complete. A two-run single in the bottom of the fifth further extended the Cobra advantage before the Trojans were able to shut them down till the sixth.

Coker added two more runs in the sixth, but the Anderson offense wasn't giving up as they worked around to bases loaded walk with two outs in the seventh to score their second run of the contest. But again, it was Coker who was able to work out of the jam and struck out the next Anderson batter, stranding three on the bags. The Cobras posted two more runs in the eighth inning while holding the Trojans scoreless the rest of the way to take the 9-2 win.

The two teams return to action tomorrow, February 25 as they kick off a doubleheader of action at 12:00 p.m.
