Women's Tennis Team Picked Eighth In CVAC Poll

THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- The Anderson College women's tennis team was picked eighth in the CVAC preseason poll as voted on by conference coaches released Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Trojans, who finished seventh in the CVAC standings last spring, return five of six players in singles. Lees-McRae, last year's CVAC's Regular Season and Tournament Champions (11-0 CVAC, 18-5), tops poll. Lees-McRae is seeking to win its third consecutive CVAC title this year, and continue its unbeaten streak of 27 matches in the conference. Its two returning seniors, Deniz Emre and Zeynep Inanli, will lead the Bobcats. Emre finished the fall ranked 46th in the nation in Division II singles, and 11th in doubles with Inanli. The team also hopes to improve on its current Di KiKpe@ ranking which stands at 37. "Although the makeup of our team is different, five of our top six players are upperclassmen. This experience should serve us well in the big matches," says Head Coach Randy Bloemendaal Pfeiffer places second in this year's preseason poll. The Falcons should be flying high this year after tying for second last year (9-2 CVAC, 14-7) and returning the entire team for 2003. All- Conference players, Nona Wagh and Kerry Felstead, return to lead the Falcons. The strong doubles duo of Jennifer Isenhour and Tanya Clontz will be teamed-up again for their third straight season together. Marie Reynolds is working hard to get her knee back to 100% so the Falcons should be in good shape. Freshman Leslie Watts, last year's N.C. State High School 1A Doubles Champion has added extra strength to the Falcon lineup. Longwood holds onto number three in the Coaches pre-season poll. Longwood finished 16-5 overall a year ago, 9-2 in the CVAC, while just missing out on its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance following a runner-up finish at the CVAC Championship Tournament. Longwood recorded a fourth consecutive season with at least 15 wins last spring and earned its first-ever national ranking at #40 in the ITA Poll late in the year. Longwood welcomes the return of juniors Danielle Hess(8-8 at #1 singles, 2nd-Team All-CVAC), along with Loren Robertson (14-7) and Cecilia Robinson (12-4) in 2003 under first-year head coach Pat Breen. Rounding out the Coaches Preseason Poll 4-12 are Barton College, Erskine College, Queens University of Charlotte, Mount Olive College, Anderson College, Belmont Abbey College, Limestone College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and Coker College respectively.
