No. 6 Women’s Golf Set for City with Spirit Fall Classic

ANDERSON, S.C. – After rallying behind a school-record 281 in the third round and finishing sixth at last week's Dallas Baptist Women's Classic, the Anderson University women's golf team is set to compete at the City with Spirit Fall Classic, which will be hosted by Lee University, Monday and Tuesday, at the Cleveland Country Club in Cleveland, Tenn.

The tournament is slated for 36 holes on Monday and 18 scheduled for Tuesday, on a par-72, 5957-yard layout.

AU will be returning to familiar territory after making an appearance at the 2021 NCAA South Regional Championship, which was also hosted at the Cleveland Country Club. The Trojans narrowly missed out on earning a berth in the NCAA Championships after finishing fourth, but then-sophomore Emma Charles became just the second golfer in school history to make an appearance on the national stage by claiming a spot in the NCAA Division II National Championships at TPC Michigan in Dearborn, Mich.

The Trojans also played at the Cleveland Country Club two years earlier – in AU's first-ever appearance in the 2019 NCAA Division II Women's Golf South Region Championship, when former standout Victoria Hall – as a freshman earned a berth in the 2019 NCAA National Championships at the PGA National Resort in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

The Trojans squared off against four of the top 10 squads in the nation and ten teams in that were in the WGCA Preseason Top 25, during their trip to the Lone Star State, and jumped five spots during the final round with their three-round 871 marking the second-lowest in school history.

Sophomore Kennedy McGaha carded the third-lowest 54-hole score in program history and paced the Trojans last week with an 11th place finish, while junior Jessica Rathbone matched the 11th-lowest three-round score in school history with a 219 and shared 25th place. Newcomer Kennedy Gooding finished in a tie for 36th place, with senior Emma Charles claiming a share of the 42nd spot. Sophomore Zoey Iglesias closed out the 54-hole tournament alongside Charles in a share of 42nd place.
