ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Anderson College women and the Pfeiffer men claimed the 2002 Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference cross country titles Friday morning at the Pine Lake Golf Club. Both races were run in near ideal conditions -- cool with a light breeze and low humidity. The AC women placed two runners in the top four -- Ashley Smoak (2nd, 19:38) and Jessica Merrill (4th, 20:22) -- to claim their first-ever CVAC title and end Lees-McRae's string of title at four. The Lady Trojans finished with 69 points. Longwood was second with 80, and Lees-McRae was third with 84. Longwood placed two runners in the top 10 -- Jessica Walton (8th, 20:46) and Kristel Moser (10th, 20:49). Beth Schultz of Mount Olive won the women's title and CVAC Runner of the Year honors with a time of 19:29, 11 seconds ahead of Smoak. Leah Evennich of Pfeiffer finished third to claim CVAC Freshman of the Year honors. Anderson's Leroy Thomas was named the CVAC Women's Coach of the Year. In the men's race, Pfeiffer placed three runners in the top 10 and four in the top 13 to edge Barton for the title. Chris Hiatt of Pfeiffer, the CVAC Runner of the Year and Freshman of the Year, won the race with a time of 27:36. Hiatt's nearest competitor was Turner Kincaid of Lees-McRae, who finished second 25 seconds behind Hiatt. Pfeiffer also placed Chris Lamperski (3rd, 28:14) and Michael Whitley (10th, 29:01) in the top 10. Pfeiffer finished with 47 points. Barton was second with 69, and Queens University of Charlotte was third with 79. Pfeiffer's Bob Marchinko was named the CVAC Men's Coach of the Year.
