TRAVELERS REST, S.C. - With senior David Wachter, freshman David Monroe and sophomore Forrest Fowler each carding 11-over-par 83s, the Anderson men's golf team sits in 13th place following first-round action of the Cliffs Intercollegiate, which is being hosted by North Greenville at the par-72, 7,017 yard Cliffs at Mountain Park layout.
Young Harris leads the two-day event by one stroke over Queen's University of Charlotte, while Brevard is seven strokes further back in third. Belmont Abbey holds the fourth spot, with Lenoir-Rhyne and Southern Wesleyan sharing fifth. King and the host Crusaders are tied for seventh, while Montevallo is alone in ninth. Pfeiffer, Malone, Pikeville and Anderson round out the 13-team field.
David Wallin of Young Harris fired an opening round, 3-under-par 69 and holds a one-shot lead over Queens' Jonathan Noble and a three-stroke advantage over the Royals' Mike Downey and Brevard's Luis Vega.
AU's Wachter, Monroe and Fowler are in the midst of a nine-way tie for 58th, while junior Payton Whitlock posted an 84 and is tied for 67th. Freshman Cole Jefferys rounded out the Black and Gold contingent tied for 70th after a first-round 85.
The final round is slated to start at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.
