THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Pfeiffer University is the favorite to win the 2006 CVAC women's golf championship, according a poll of the league's coaches. Anderson University was picked third in the poll. The Falcons won the 2005 CVAC title by a 28-stroke margin. New head coach Brandon Turner believes his young team has enough to defend its title. Pfeiffer will need CVAC Freshmen & Player of the Year Nikki Taggart to take their leadership role. Limestone College finished in second place in the coaches' preseason poll. The Lady Saints finished last year in a tie for second place at the CVAC Tournament and return first team All-CVAC member Holly Tomkins, who finished second in the CVAC Tourney, and second team member Katie Clayton. Anderson has a core group of seven players led by freshman Erin May and junior Carlie Eastman. "The core group knows they're going to play," said Anderson head coach Danny Neal. "I have to work to keep them working to improve, but they're not satisfied just to play. They want to compete and win." Anderson looks to use their experience to regain their championship status. Eastman and fellow juniors Jennifer Odle and Jenny Fretwell were members of Anderson's CVAC championship team in 2004. "All three have matured some in their games and have gained some valuable experience," Neal said. Rounding out the women's golf preseason poll 4-6 were: Belmont Abbey, St. Andrews, Queens, and Mount Olive respectively.
