Powell, McCrodden On The Mark Against Abbey

ANDERSON, S.C. - Lauren Powell pitched a two-hit shutout in the first game and Kelly McCrodden matched her with a two-hit shutout of her own in the second game to lead Anderson College to a sweep of Belmont Abbey in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Smethers Field. In the first game, Powell struck out nine and allowed just two singles and Caroline Rochester drove in four runs to lead Anderson to a 7-0 victory. Anderson used five singles and a throwing error to take a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Rochester and Carolyn Smith had RBI singles in the inning. Anderson, 11-11 overall and 4-1 in the CVAC, broke the game open with a four-run fourth. After two walks and a fielder's choice loaded the bases, Rochester cleaned them off with a triple down the right field line. Smith then brought Rochester home with a sharp single up the middle. Powell, 7-4, stranded eight Belmont Abbey runners and allowed just one Crusader to reach third base. Rochester, Smith, PJ Taylor, and Angela Hauff all had two hits apiece for Anderson in the first game. In the second game, McCrodden, 4-7, outdueled Belmont Abbey's Amanda Bechtoldt. The game was scoreless through five innings, but in the bottom of the sixth, Anderson finally broke through. Smith led off with a single to right center. Pinch runner Mary Arthur moved to second on a ground out. With two outs, Melissa Waters reached on an infield hit to move Arthur to third. Arthur then score the lone run of the game when PJ Taylor beat out a high chopper to shortstop. Waters, who was 3 for 3, was the lone Anderson player with multiple hits in the second game. McCrodden struck out five and retired 15 of the last 17 she faced. But she had to survive a scare in the top of the seventh. With one out, Jennifer Van Gundy reached on an error and Stephanie Spink singled. A ground out advanced the runners to second and third, but Lindsay Brooks grounded out to end the game. Bechtoldt scattered seven hits and walked just one. Fifteen of AC's 18 outs were ground ball outs. Belmont Abbey falls to 0-7, 0-2. Game One Statistics Game Two Statistics Season Statistics
