Men’s Soccer Hosts Mars Hill on Saturday

ANDERSON, S.C. - Suffering a 2-1 double-overtime setback in dramatic fashion to defending South Atlantic Conference champion Queens on Wednesday, Anderson University men's soccer looks to get back on the winning track as it hosts Mars Hill on Saturday. Kickoff from Trojan Stadium is slated for 3:30 p.m.

The Trojans
As Anderson enters the heart of its regular season schedule, the Trojans have faced a season of streaks as they snapped a three-match winning streak on Wednesday. Before the positive stretch, AU began its 2014 campaign with a two-match winless streak. With Wednesday's heartbreaking setback, the Trojans enter Saturday's matchup with an even 3-3 overall record and a 2-1 mark in league play.

With a goal against Queens, junior forward Andre Carle leads Anderson with three goals on the year, taking the outright lead from newcomer Magnus Larsen, who has two goals in AU's first six contests. The tandem combines for 29 of AU's 78 shots on the year as they are two of 31 players in conference with 10 or more shots on the year. Carle's eight shots on goal currently rank fifth in the league.

Defensively, the Trojans have posted three shutouts in their first six contests, as sophomore goalkeeper Bo Haug is responsible for all three. Haug has recorded 10 saves for the season and has played over 450 minutes in goal.

The Lions
Last season, Mars Hill advanced to the SAC Tournament semifinals after a 1-0 win over eventual National Runner-up, Carson-Newman. Despite the win in the quarterfinals, MHU's season was cut down by Anderson as a Martin Brain penalty kick was all AU needed to advance to its fourth straight SAC Tournament final.

This season, after dropping its first four matches of the season, Mars Hill has responded with back-to-back triumphs, knocking off conference foes Tusculum, 1-0, and Lincoln Memorial, 2-1. With the two victories, the Lions enter Saturday with a 2-4 record and an identical 2-1 record in the conference.

Five different MHU players have scored goals on the year, as sophomore Thomaz Freitas leads the club with two goals and four points. With one goal on the year, senior Alex Mullen paces Mars Hill with a league-leading 26 shots on the year, as he is currently the only player in the SAC with 20 or more shots.

The goalkeeping duo of junior Chris Mitchell and sophomore Oliver Pannell have split time in goal for the Lions, as the pair have three starts apiece. Mitchell leads the team in saves with 22 and is responsible for both of MHU's wins on the year.

The Series
Since joining the SAC prior to the 2010 season, Anderson is 5-1-1 against Mars Hill, combining both regular season and SAC Tournament matches. During last year's regular season matchup, Carle scored the match's only goal to propel the Trojans to a 1-0 win at Meares Stadium.
