ANDERSON, S.C. - First-year head coach Michael Zion has made his first addition to the Anderson University men's soccer coaching staff, as the former Trojan standout has added Will Van Nostrand to the staff for the 2014 season, announced on Wednesday.
Before spending time at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa as the men's soccer head coach, Van Nostrand spent three seasons as the men's and women's soccer assistant coach at his alma mater, Spalding, in Louisville, Ky. While at Spalding, Van Nostrand's primary responsibilities included recruiting, technical training budgeting for the program and game-day operations. The Louisville native also assisted with the team's website and social media outlets while helping with the reserve teams.
At the club level, Van Nostrand spent three years with the Louisville Soccer Alliance, being named the head coach of the U-23 men's team in 2013 and the assistant coach of the 98's men team from 2012-14. With the Louisville Soccer Alliance, his U-23 squad was a member of the United States Adult Soccer Association and won a state championship in 2013 and finished second in the state in 2014. Following both seasons, the team earned a spot into the Region II Championships and the Tournament of Champions.
Also in 2014, Van Nostrand earned his license through the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
As a player, Van Nostrand's collegiate career started at Spalding where he was named all-Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second team in 2003 and 2004. Following the 2004 season, Spalding transferred to Anderson where he played with Zion for two seasons until 2007. While with the Trojans, Van Nostrand started in the midfield and scored five goals and totaled six assists, leading the Black and Gold to a winning record in 2005.
Van Nostrand left Anderson and finished out his collegiate career with Spalding in 2009 where he was named an United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-American following his final season. To go along with his All-American status, the midfielder was named to the all-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) second team and the all-conference academic team, while regionally being selected to the NSCAA academic all-region team.
Before returning to Spalding, Van Nostrand spent a year with the Professional Development League's Palm Beach Pumas and helped the team to a sixth place finish in the Southeast Division.
In the classroom, Van Nostram earned a bachelor of science in business administration in 2012 and his master's in business communication in 2014, both from Spalding.
Van Nostrand and the Trojans begin their 2014 season on Aug. 22 with a scrimmage against Conference Carolinas power Limestone at Legacy Charter in Greenville. Anderson opens its regular season in Florida with back-to-back matches with Rollins on Sept. 4 and Flagler on Sept. 6. After three road contests, the Black and Gold open their home slate on Sept. 17 with a meeting with archrival Erskine at 4 p.m.
