Belmont Abbey Outlasts Anderson, 2-1

BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey scored goals early in both halves then held on to defeat Anderson 2-1 in a CVAC quarterfinal game Wednesday at Belmont. The Crusaders jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of the game when John Radeck took a pass from Greg Gojanovich and fired a shot past Anderson goalkeeper Kevin Rugaard for his 12th goal of the season. The Crusaders extended their lead just 4:40 into the second half when Stephen Guild served a pass to a streaking Gojanovich, who put his shot over Rugaard's outstretched hand and into the net. Anderson cut the lead to 2-1 with 10:06 left in the game on a penalty kick by Marcus Bradley. The Trojans continued to attack the Crusader goal in the closing minutes. AC's best chance came with 30 seconds left when a header by Bradley sailed just over the crossbar. Belmont Abbey outshot Anderson 18-10, and Sean O'Connor made five saves to earn the victory. Rugaard made seven saves for Anderson. Belmont Abbey improves to 12-6-2 and advances to the CVAC semifinals Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of the Lees-McRae/Limestone game.
