Lees-McRae Sweeps CVAC Cross Country Titles

ANDERSON, S.C. - Lees-McRae College claimed both the men's and women's titles in dominating fashion Friday morning at the Pine Lake Golf Club. In the men's 8K race, Lees-McRae placed four runners in the top 10 to take the championship. The Bobcats finished with 34 points, 20 points ahead of second-place Pfeiffer University. Queens University of Charlotte was third with 105 points. Lewis Martin (2nd, 27:39), Joe Barnett (4th, 27:56), Andrew Walton (6th, 28:04), and Brian Knapp (9th, 28:32) all finished in the top 10 for the Bobcats. Both races on the hilly Pine Lake course were run in near ideal conditions - sunny with temperatures in the low 50s. For the second straight year, the individual men's champion was Chris Hiatt of Pfeiffer. Hiatt ran a course-record 27:13 to take the individual title. Hiatt beat his 2002 time on the Pine Lake course by 23 seconds. Hiatt, a three-time CVAC Runner of the Week this fall, earned league Runner of the Year honors. With his second-place finish, Martin earned CVAC Freshman of the Year honors. For leading the Bobcats to the title, Lees-McRae head coach Craig McPhail was named CVAC Men's Coach of the Year. The remainder of the men's field was: Coker 106, St. Andrews Presbyterian 112, Barton 143, Anderson 190, Erskine 207, Belmont Abbey 208, and Limestone 256. Lees-McRae also dominated the 5K women's race. The Bobcats placed five runners in the top 10 and finished the race with 22 points. Leslie Thurman (2nd, 20:02), Angela Chappell (3rd, 20:08), Mairy Trexler (5th, 20:33), Casey Willis (9th, 20:55), and Rebecca Johnson (10th, 20:58) all finished in the top 10 for the Bobcats. Anderson was second with 84 points, and Queens was third with 90 points. Beth Schultz Martin of Mount Olive, a two-time CVAC Runner of the Week, won the individual title with a time of 19:39. It was her second consecutive individual crown. Thurman was named CVAC Freshman of the Year, and McPhail earned CVAC Women's Coach of the Year honors. The remainder of the women's field was: Barton 132, Pfeiffer 136, Erskine 140, St. Andrews 140, and Belmont Abbey 151. Erskine finished sixth over St. Andrews because of a better finish by its fifth-place runner.
