Segers Named CVAC Freshman Of The Year

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Leann Segers of Anderson College was named Freshman of the Year in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference Friday night. "This is a tremendous accomplishment for Leann," said AC head coach Kevin Pederson. "She stepped right in and made an immediate impact on our program. We are excited about her future here at Anderson College." Segers, a 5-foot-8 native of Hartwell, Ga., made 23 starts in 29 games and led Anderson to a 17-12 record and a fifth-place finish in the CVAC standings. She led the Lady Trojans in scoring (16.4), 3-point goals made (85) and 3-point percentage (.427). Segers, who also was named to the All-CVAC second team, set freshman records at AC for points in a season (476), field goals made (168), and 3-point field goals made (85). She also set single-game records for points scored (40 against St. Andrews on Feb. 20), 3-point goals (9 against North Greenville on Dec. 12), and assists (15 against Allen on Jan. 6). Segers scored 35 or more points in four games, and she averaged 19.4 points per game in conference play. She had a string of 11 straight double-figure games during the season, and she made five or more 3-point goals in a single game five times. In 29 games, she scored in double figures 18 times. Segers is the fourth Anderson College athlete to be selected CVAC Freshman of the Year. The other three - Clay Huggins (basketball), Alejandro Gallo (tennis), and Brandon Clark (baseball) - all received the Freshman of the Year honor in 1999.
