Onger's Golden Goal Topples No. 11 Bobcats

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Lahnden Onger took a pass from Zach Denson and connected from the left wing at 97:59 to give Anderson University a 1-0 upset victory over No. 11 Lees-McRae in a Conference Carolinas match Saturday afternoon at Smethers Field. Anderson improves to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in Conference Carolinas. The loss was Lees-McRae's first of the season and drops the Bobcats to 5-1-1, 1-1. "We're getting better," said Anderson head coach Rob Miller. "We're gaining experience, and I think we're becoming a more mature team. I think a real key today was we held our composure. We were mentally tougher on all the plays today. This was one of the better wins we've had since I've been here." The match was a physical showdown. A total of 49 fouls -- 28 on Anderson and 21 on Lees-McRae -- were called in the match. Both teams were given five yellow cards, and Anderson received one red card. At the 97:35 mark, Anderson goalkeeper Adrian Osborne came out to challenge for the ball and collided with a Lees-McRae player. Osborne received a red card on the play and was replaced by Preston Freeman. Just 24 seconds later, Onger, a junior from Abilene, Tx., scored to give AU the victory. The goal was Onger's second of the season and his first game-winning goal. Lees-McRae entered the match averaging 4.83 goals per outing, but Osborne made five saves to blank the Bobcats.
