Men's Golf Team Picked Fourth In CVAC Poll

THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Coker College, last year's Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament runner-up, tops the 2004 preseason poll as voted on by conference coaches, the CVAC office announced Wednesday. Coker finished second in both the CVAC Tournament and the NCAA Atlantic Regional last year, one stroke away from a trip to the NCAA National Tournament. The Cobras lost three members of last year's squad, but senior Chad Parramore returns to guide a young team. In the fall, the Cobras didn't miss a beat from last season's strong finish, winning three tournaments and finishing third in another. Freshmen Louis-Pierre Godin, Blaine Rogers, and Brad Wissmueller led the team in scoring average in the fall and help form what may be a deeper team than last year. Pfeiffer University, the 2003 CVAC Tournament Champions is a solid pick for second in poll. After graduating five All-CVAC players, including three All-Americans in the last two years, the Falcons have recruited an impressive freshmen class. Playing four freshmen in the starting line-up, the Falcons compiled a record of two seconds and three third place finishes. The Falcons are the four-time reigning CVAC Champions and are looking to add a fifth Championship. Barton College comes in third in the poll. The Barton College golf team is coming off the most successful season in school history. The Bulldogs were ranked as high as No. 5 nationally, won the 2003 NCAA Atlantic Regional and played for the national championship in Oregon. That team, which was among the nation's scoring leaders with a 293 average, returns four of its starting five and features eight returnees and three newcomers. Barton is led by senior All-American and Academic All-American Courtney Faircloth of Wilson (72.7 average), who is ranked second in the region after the 2003 fall campaign. Faircloth, sophomore Jonathan Woodall of Wilson (made the six-player GCAA All-Freshman team in 2003) and junior Josh Talton of Smithfield were All-Region picks last season. Rounding out the golf preseason poll 4-10 were: Anderson, which won two tournaments in the fall and received one first-place vote, and Belmont Abbey (Tie-4th), St. Andrews, Queens, Limestone, Mt. Olive, and Lees-McRae. 2004 CVAC Men's Golf Poll (First place votes in parenthesis) 1. Coker (6) 75 2. Pfeiffer (3) 65 3. Barton 60 T-4. Anderson (1) 56 T-4. Belmont Abbey 56 6.
