No. 36 Trojans Square Off With No. 21 Wingate

ANDERSON, S.C. – The No. 36 Anderson Trojans (13-3, 9-2 SAC) wrap up regular-season SAC play on Sunday with a trip to take on No. 21 Wingate (16-2, 11-0 SAC). AU and the Bulldogs met twice last season, splitting both meetings. Both teams enter the match looking to build momentum before the SAC Tournament.

WHAT'S AT STAKE

For Anderson:

  • AU is locked into the 4th seed for the SAC Tournament, no matter the result of this match
  • The Trojans are looking for their second win over a ranked opponent on the season

For Wingate:

  • The Bulldogs have clinched the top seed in next week's SAC Tournament
  • Wingate is seeking their sixth win over a ranked opponent this season

 

LAST TIME OUT

AU was victorious on Senior Day against Catawba on Tuesday by a score of 5-2. Despite a tight doubles point and multiple singles matches that went to three sets, the Trojans emerged victorious with contributions from seniors Aaron Cabo and Spencer Snow.

 

REVENGE ON TROJANS' MIND

  • The two teams last met in the 2022 SAC Tournament, following a 4-3 AU win earlier in the regular season. Despite leading for the majority of the doubles, the Trojans dropped a tight doubles point. In a singles portion that was back-and-forth, the Bulldogs came out on top 4-2. On Friday, the Trojans seek revenge almost a year later.

 

A LOOK AT WINGATE

  • The Bulldogs are in the midst of an 11-match winning streak, to complement a 16-2 overall record.The lone losses for WU came to then-No. 2 Columbus State and Division I foe Gardner-Webb.
  • In singles, Florian Walcher enters play ranked No. 46 nationally.
    • The sophomore leads the team with a 13-1 record at No. 1. His only loss came at the hands of the No. 1-ranked player in the nation.
  • Fellow sophomore Gabriel Constantino has posted a 13-4 record himself, and is ranked at No. 53.
  • In doubles, the team of Constantino and Edis Nokic are 11-1 together at the No. 1 spot, including 8-1 against SAC opponents.

 

UP NEXT

AU returns home for their final match of the regular season on Tuesday against USC Sumter. The Trojans and Fire Ants will begin play at 2:00 p.m.
