Cross Country Sweeps Wingate Invitational

ANDERSON, S.C. -- A week after strong outings at USC Upstates Eye-Opener, the Anderson cross country teams each claimed wins at the Wingate Invitational Saturday morning. The Trojans topped host Wingate by 18 points to win the womens crown. In the mens event, Anderson edged the home-standing Bulldogs by two points. The race serves as the pre-regional meet for the 2009 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional that will be hosted by Wingate on Nov. 7. "I was very pleased today," said Anderson head coach Randy Greer. "It was a solid effort all the way around. Our 3-4-5 guys were the key on the men's side." On the women's side, Anderson had four runners in the top 10, led by sophomore Whitney Bishoff with her event-winning 6K time of 24:07. Bishoff has good memories of the Wingate course, as she qualified for the NCAA national meet with a third-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional (23:15 6K time). Bishoff was not a one-woman show, as juniors Lynne Flint (second-place, 25:28) and Chelsea Rogers (eighth, 26:16) and freshman Emily Eckroth (ninth, 26:24) secured spots in the top 10. Freshman Isabel Berry (21st, 28:19) completed the scoring for the AU Trojans. For the AU men, Anderson had five runners finish in the top 15 to edge Wingate for the team title. Tusculum's ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Simon Holzapfel won the men's 8K race with a time of 26:38. The Pioneer junior outdistanced his nearest competitor by a whopping 50 seconds. Senior Alex Jordan led the AU Trojans, claiming second place with a time of 27:28. Anderson freshman Matt Shaffer claimed seventh place with a time of 28:49. Other finishers for the Trojans include sophomore Jonathan Stephens (13th, 29:37) and freshmen Nigel Reynolds (14th, 29:39) and Alex Pena (15th, 29:43). Next up for the Trojans is the Winthrop Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 19.
