Penny Named Assistant Baseball Coach

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University head baseball coach Joe Miller has announced that former North Carolina hurler and Thomasville (N.C.) Hi-Toms Pitching Coach Cody Penny has been named an assistant coach with the Trojans.

"We are excited to have Cody join our staff," said Miller. "He will be handling the pitching staff and will also serve as the recruiting coordinator. Cody has worked with some of the top talent in the nation after coaching in the Coastal Plains League this summer. He played professionally and is eager to get started at the collegiate level. We are thrilled to have him here."

Following his junior season with the Tar Heels, Penny was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 16th-round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft and was a finalist for Reliever of the Year in the Indians' organization. He spent two years in Low and High A affiliated baseball with Mahoning Valley, Lake County and Carolina.

As a sophomore hurler in Chapel Hill, Penny was member of the UNC squad that defeated Texas but fell twice to Vanderbilt in the 2011 College World Series. The 6-foot-3 right-hander posted five saves in 22 appearances out of the Tar Heel bullpen during the 2011 campaign and was named the Tar Heels' Most Valuable Pitcher in the fall of 2011.

During his prep career at South Caldwell High School, the Hudson, N.C., native helped lead the Spartans to a Class 4A Carolina State Championship. Following his professional career Penny returned to his high school alma mater as an assistant coach and helped guide the Spartans to a stellar 75-9 record from 2014-2016.

Penny worked with the Hi-Toms' pitchers this past season, maximizing their abilities and helping guide the team to a 30-25 record in the Coastal Plains League.

""I am extremely grateful to Anderson University and Coach Miller for the opportunity before me," said Penny. "I look forward to impacting and representing the Anderson community on and off the field."

Penny earned his bachelor's degree in Management and Society from UNC earlier this year.
