Second Half Goal Lifts Trojans over Lenoir-Rhyne; 1-0

WELLFORD, S.C. – Anderson University women's soccer used a late second half goal to defeat South Atlantic foe Lenoir-Rhyne, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Upward Stars Center in Wellford.

With the victory, Anderson moves to 7-4 overall and 4-3 in conference play while snapping a three match losing streak. The Bears drop to 7-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in SAC action.

The 1-0 win for the Trojans was the first win over the Bears since joining the SAC in 2010, the Trojans had not defeated Lenoir-Rhyne in nine attempts, 0-8-1.

The first 45 minutes was played dead even with both teams getting off six shots apiece and neither team taking a corner kick.

Lenoir-Rhyne opened up the second half getting off seven of its nine total shots in the first 20 minutes of the period. On just the second shot of the half for Anderson, recent Trojan subs Michaela Johnson and Lyssa Engle teamed up in the 68th minute to give AU the 1-0 lead. Engle gave chase on a ball to the corner serving up a perfect cross to Johnson who was able to head the ball past the keeper. Johnson's eventual game winner was her first career goal for the Black and Gold.

Trojans keeper Abby Helm recorded two saves moving her overall record to 6-2 with six clean sheets.

Anderson returns to action on Saturday when it travels to SAC opponent Catawba. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
