Women’s Soccer Plays Solid to Defeat Wingate at Home; 2-0

ANDERSON, S.C. – Anderson University women's soccer picks up its second straight South Atlantic Conference win and its first victory against Wingate since joining the SAC before the 2010 season. The last time Anderson was 2-0 to start conference play was during the 2012-13 season.

With the win, the Trojans move to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in conference action while the Bulldogs fall to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1 in SAC play.

Just four minutes into the match sophomore Sophie Riggs connected with senior Tina Shakes in front of the goal with Shakes drilling it into the back of the net for her eighth goal of the season.

The Trojans were able to connect again on a penalty kick taken by Alaina Gay at the 8:11 mark in the first half for Gay's third goal of the year.

The Black and Gold were outshot 22-8, but the solid play of Trojans backline and senior goalie Abby Helm secured the win. Helm was credited with 13 saves on the afternoon.

Anderson returns to action on Wednesday when it host SAC opponent Brevard. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m. at Trojan Stadium.
