Women’s Soccer Opens SAC Play with Win over Coker; 2-0

HARSTVILLE, S.C. – Anderson University women's soccer bounced back from a 4-1 loss on Friday to defeat South Atlantic Conference foe Coker, 2-0, on Wednesday afternoon.

With the win, the Trojans improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the SAC while the Cobras fall to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

INSIDE THE BOX
Anderson outshot Coker 16-4 on the afternoon while each team was credited with four corner kicks.

Seventeen Trojans saw action with seven different players taking a total of 16 shots. Senior Tina Shakes led the way with seven shots with three coming on goal. Shakes netted her seventh goal of the season and was credited with her first assist of the season.

Sophomore Abby Helm was credited with two saves moving her record to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in SAC play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF
Anderson attacked early getting four shots off in the first 18 minutes of the contest. Coker's goalie Shelby Middleton recorded two saves during that period.

At the 18:39 mark, freshman Melanie Maddox received the pass from Shakes and drilled it high past the Cobra's Middleton for the first score of the match and first goal of Maddox's career.

SECOND HALF
The Trojans continued to put pressure on Coker outshooting the Cobras 9-3 in the second half.

Shakes scored her seventh goal of the season at the 65:45 mark to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead and set the final score.

UP NEXT
Anderson returns home to host SAC powerhouse Wingate on Saturday. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Trojan Field.
