Langston, Atkinson Named CVAC Athletes Of The Year

THOMASVILLE, N.C. -- Deidra Langston of Anderson University and Anthony Atkinson of Barton College have been named the 2006-07 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Female and Male Athletes of the Year as voted on by the conference Athletics Directors, the league announced Tuesday afternoon. This prestigious award is presented annually to both a male and female student-athlete in recognition of their athletic contributions and achievements. Langston, the second AU female athlete to win the award, averaged 19.8 points and 7.7 rebounds per game to lead the Lady Trojans to their fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Langston, the CVAC's women's basketball Player of the Year scored 20 or more points in 16 games and recorded nine double-doubles. Langston scored a season-high 37 points against Coker on January 25th and grabbed 15 rebounds in a single game twice last year. Langston was also named to the All-Time CVAC Team, which honored the best of the best CVAC era athletes. She gained national attention as she was also named First-Team All-East Region and Second-Team All-American by the Division II Bulletin. Langston finished her career No. 1 on Anderson's all-time rebounding list and No. 2 on Anderson's all-time scoring list. She finished her career with 2,114 points and 900 rebounds. Atkinson adds the CVAC Athlete of the Year award to the many accomplishments he has piled-up this year. His awards for the year include First-Team All-American (NABC and Basketball Times), Elite Eight MVP after leading Barton College to the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship, East Region MVP, CVAC All-Time Team member, CVAC Tournament MVP (2nd straight year), CVAC Player of Year (2nd straight year); Barton College's Kiwanis Male Athlete of the Year, NC All-State College Team (2nd straight year), Barton Men's Basketball MVP, and finalist for the prestigious Bob Cousy Award given to the nation's top point guard (one of just two from D-II). Atkinson led Barton to a 9-0 overtime record (all-time, all-division NCAA record) by scoring 53 of team's 123 points (43%) in extra sessions while leading Barton to back-to-back CVAC regular season, CVAC Tournament, NCAA East Region titles, and back-to-back trips to the Elite Eight as the Bulldogs went a phenomenal 59-9 (.868) overall and 37-3 (.925) in his two years at point guard. He scored the winning points in the final possession of all three Elite Eight games, including the championship-winning basket at the buzzer to knock off undefeated defending National Champion Winona State University, who was ranked No. 1 all season and riding a 57-game win streak. Atkinson averaged 26.7 points and 41.6 minutes played during Elite Eight games and averaged 20.8 points, 6 assists and 1.9 steals per game this season while shooting 46 percent from the floor and 81.5 percent from the foul line.
