Lady Trojans Receive Bid To NCAA Tournament

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Anderson University women's basketball team received its fourth straight bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament Sunday night. The Lady Trojans, 23-7 overall, are the No. 4 seed in the East Regional, which will be played at Glenville State (W.Va.). The regional quarterfinals will be played Friday, the semifinals on Saturday, and the championship game on Monday. The winner of the tournament advances to the Elite Eight at Kearney, Neb., during the third week of March. The top seed in the East Regional is host Glenville State (30-2), the regular-season and tournament champions of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Four of the eight teams in the East Regional are members of the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (Anderson, No. 2 Pfeiffer, No. 6 Barton, and No. 8 St. Andrews Presbyterian), a record for the league. Anderson is 4-3 in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Trojans reached the East Regional final in 2005. In two of their three trips, the Lady Trojans have been eliminated by Glenville State. In last year's East Regional at Charleston, W.Va., Anderson beat West Liberty State in the first round before losing to Glenville State in the semifinals. Anderson is led by senior forward Deidra Langston, the CVAC Player of the Year and a member of the CVAC's All-Time Team. The first-round games in the tournament are: No. 1 Glenville State against No. 8 St. Andrews (20-9), No. 4 Anderson against No. 5 California (Pa.) (21-9), No. 3 Indiana (Pa.) (22-8), the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division champion and tournament champion, against No. 6 Barton (21-7), and No. 2 Pfeiffer (26-4), the CVAC regular-season and tournament champion, against No. 7 Pitt-Johnstown (20-7). Anderson has never played California (Pa.), the '04 Division II national champion, during the regular season or in the NCAA Tournament, but the two schools have crossed paths. Anderson's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament was made at California (Pa.), and the Vulcans were one of the eight teams to participate in the '05 regional at Anderson. Friday's game times will be announced Monday. The Lady Trojans will leave for Glenville Wednesday at 2 p.m.
