Lady Trojans Rip Abbey; Advance To Semifinals

ANDERSON, S.C. -- Deidra Langston scored 31 points and Kim Hausman recorded a double-double -- 10 points and 11 rebounds -- to lead No. 25 Anderson University to an 84-58 victory over Belmont Abbey in the second round of the CVAC Tournament Wednesday night at the Abney Center. "I thought we had an outstanding defensive effort from start to finish tonight," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "Everything was keyed by our defense, especially the 15-0 run to start the game. I was very happy for Kim Hausman, who was playing in her final home game, to get a double-double. It was the best game she has played in the last two years." Anderson, 22-6 overall, advances to face Barton at Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, N.C., Friday afternoon. Belmont Abbey's season ends at 13-15. The two teams split during the regular season and Belmont Abbey handed Anderson a 73-55 loss on Feb. 19 at Belmont, N.C. But the third meeting was all Anderson. Anderson, ranked No. 4 in the East Region, never trailed. The Lady Trojans jumped out to a 15-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Langston scored three baskets and converted a three-point play and Latrice Thomas scored three baskets to fuel the hot start by the Lady Trojans. Belmont Abbey got within eight points two times early in the second half but could get no closer. A 20-8 run by Anderson put the Lady Trojans up 66-46 with 9:15 remaining. Two free throws by Keana Boyd gave Anderson its largest lead of the game of 30 points -- 82-52 -- with 2:21 remaining. Langston, a senior from Gainesville, Ga., was 11-for-21 from the field and 9-for-9 from the line in her final home game. In addition to her double-double, Hausman, a senior from Watkinsville, Ga., had four assists, three steals, and one block. Thomas was the third Anderson player in double figures with 13 points. Thomas also had four assists and three steals. Amy Mulnix and Marie Marquez scored 12 points apiece for Belmont Abbey. Anderson shot 43 percent from the field in both halves. Belmont Abbey shot just 29 percent from the field in the first half and 30 percent for the game. The Lady Trojans had 34 points in the paint to 10 for Belmont Abbey. Anderson scored 24 points off 22 Belmont Abbey turnovers. Anderson was 26-for-30 from the free throw line, while Belmont Abbey was 24-for-33. Led by Hausman and Haley Riffle, who had eight rebounds, Anderson dominated the boards, 45-33. Anderson's three seniors -- Langston, Hausman, and Kimberly Williams -- are now 107-21 overall.
