Lady Trojans Bounce Cal From The Tournament

GLENVILLE, W.Va. -- Keana Boyd scored 23 points to lead Anderson University to a 61-57 victory over California (Pa.) in the first round of the NCAA East Regional Friday night at the Lilly Gym. Anderson, 24-7 overall, advances to face host Glenville State, an 81-44 winner over St. Andrews Presbyterian, Saturday at 8 p.m. Anderson is 0-2 against Glenville State in the NCAA Tournament. California, the 2004 Division II national champion, ends its season at 21-10. Anderson trailed 9-2 three and a half minutes into the game, but the Lady Trojans rallied to tie the game at 11 with 12:08 remaining. Two free throws by Mikala Fogle-Wilson gave Anderson its first lead of the game at 13-11 with 11:48 remaining. Anderson never trailed again. Two free throws by Fogle-Wilson gave Anderson its largest lead of the game -- 32-20 -- with 1:23 to play. Anderson led 34-26 at the half. The Vulcans used a 16-8 run to cut the AU lead to 54-50 with 5:12 to play. A free throw and layup by Boyd pushed Anderson's lead by to seven -- 57-50 -- with 2:54 to play. A layup by Lindsey Johnson sliced the Anderson lead to 58-55 with 34 seconds remaining, but two free throws by Genia Holbrook and one by Latrice Thomas sealed the victory for Anderson. The biggest statistic in the game was the free throw line. Anderson used aggressive play to get to the line. The Lady Trojans were 19-for-25 from the line, while Cal was just 3-for-7. The Lady Trojans are now 5-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 4-0 in opening round games. Boyd, a sophomore from Newberry, was 10-for-20 from the field. It was her fifth 20-point game of the season, her first since she scored 22 against Coker on Feb. 12. Boyd, who also had six of Anderson's 12 steals, has scored in double figures in nine of her last 11 games. Boyd was the only Anderson player in double figures. Cal was led by Bre Dillon with 19 points, Kim Nowakowski with 14 points, and Lindsey Johnson with 11. Holbrook and Thomas had seven rebounds apiece for Anderson. In the two early games Friday, Indiana (Pa.) beat Barton, 75-61; and Pitt-Johnstown upset Pfeiffer, 71-58. Anderson University Women's Basketball Statistics
