Glenville State Eliminates Lady Trojans

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Anderson Lady Trojans ran into a familiar road block Saturday night. And for the third time in four years, that roadblock -- Glenville State -- has eliminated Anderson from the NCAA Division II Women's Tournament. Rachel Redick scored 29 points to lead the No. 2-ranked Pioneers to a 78-64 victory over No. 23 Anderson at a packed Lilly Gym Saturday night. "They showed us why they're the No. 2 team in the country," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "They are a very talented team, and they can hurt you is so many ways. I was happy with the way we competed. The second half we battled and got the deficit to single digits. They're too good to be down 16 at the half in their gym." Glenville State (32-2) will face Indiana (Pa.), a 75-59 winner over Pitt-Johnstown, in Monday night's East Regional championship game. The winner of the regional championship will advance to the Elite Eight in Kearney, Neb., Mar. 21-24. Anderson ends its season at 24-8. The Lady Trojans are now 5-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 1-3 in regional semifinal games. Redick, a 5-foot-8 senior from Franklin, Pa., was 9-for-17 from the field, 4-for-8 from behind the arc, and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Anderson's three seniors - Deidra Langston, Kim Hausman, and Kimberly Williams - end their careers with a four-year record of 109-23. Melanie Oliver and Christy Alltop added 16 points and 10 points, respectively, for Glenville. Anderson was led by Keana Boyd with 13 points and Haley Riffle with 12 points. Anderson's Deidra Langston never got anything going against Glenville's physical play inside. Langston was 2-for-13 from the field in her final game for the Lady Trojans. Anderson led 19-13 with 9:07 remaining in the first half, but then Glenville exploded. The Pioneers put together a 29-7 run to seize a 42-26 lead at the break. Glenville State shot 48 percent in the first half while limiting Anderson to 36 percent. Anderson did not score a field goal in the final six minutes of the first half. Redick scored 17 of her points in the first half. In the second half, Anderson battled to stay in the game but never managed to make a significant cut into the double-digit deficit. The Lady Trojans got 10 - 45-35 - with 16:47 remaining but could get no closer. "It just seemed like every time we got some momentum there was an untimely offensive rebound or Redick hit a shot," Dow said. For the game, Glenville shot 50 percent from the field, while Anderson stayed at 36 percent. Glenville won the boards, 39-32. Glenville's Karina Kendrick was the game's leading rebounder with eight. The Pioneers had 19 assists on 29 baskets. Glenville State has now won 91 of its last 93 home games. 2006-07 Anderson University Women's Basketball Final Statistics
