Lady Trojans Reach Fourth Straight CVAC Final

MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- Deidra Langston scored 30 points and and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead No. 25 Anderson University to a 71-59 victory over Barton in the semifinals of the CVAC Tournament Friday afternoon. Anderson, 23-6 and ranked No. 4 in the East Region, will play for its fourth straight CVAC Tournament title Saturday at 5 p.m. against host Pfeiffer, a 73-59 victor over St. Andrews Presbyterian in Friday's first semifinal. Anderson has won three straight CVAC Tournament titles. The loss drops Barton, ranked No. 3 in the East Region, to 21-7. "It's always fun to advance in a tournament and beat your archrival at the same time," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "Last year, we beat them in the championship game in overtime. This was a similar type game today. We got behind early, but during one of the time outs, I told the team to peck away and keep battling. It was a terrific effort by our players." Langston, the CVAC Player of the Year and a member of the All-Time CVAC team, was 10-for-20 from the field and 10-for-11 from the free throw line. She scored 20 of her 30 points in the second half. In Anderson's two tournament games, Langston, a 5-foot-10 senior from Gainesville, Ga., is averaging 30.5 points per game. Anderson trailed 25-16 with 5:46 remaining in the first half, but the Lady Trojans put together a 14-4 run to take a 30-29 lead at the half. After three lead changes midway through the second half, Anderson went on a 22-7 run to seize a 66-50 lead with 3:19 to play. Langston scored 14 points during the run. Keana Boyd came off the bench to add 17 points for the Lady Trojans. Barton was led by Kendra Thomas with 21 points and Jo Denevan with 17 points. Anderson shot 59 percent (13-22) in the second half to finish the game at 45 percent. Barton shot nearly 60 percent in the first 10 minutes of the game, but Anderson went to a zone to cool off the Bulldogs' inside game. Barton shot just 35 percent in the second half and finished the game at 40 percent. "We played 30 minutes of zone," Dow said. "We don't like to play that much zone, but our players adjusted and they deserve a lot of credit." Led by Langston, Anderson won the boards, 41-33. Another big difference in the game was the free throw line. Anderson was 21-for-25, while Barton made just 13 of 25. During the regular season, Anderson split with Pfeiffer, the No. 1 seed in the tournament. "We have to try and control the tempo because they like to press and run," Dow said. "We like to run too, but we want it to be a basketball game and not a track meet." Box: Anderson 71, Barton 59 Anderson University Women's Basketball Statistics
