Lady Trojans Take On Cal Friday Night

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - The Anderson University women's basketball team will face California of Pennsylvania in the first round of the NCAA Division II East Regional Friday at 6 p.m. at Glenville State College. Anderson is making its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Trojans are 4-3 in the tournament and reached the East Regional final in 2005. The Lady Trojans, 23-7 overall, are the No. 4 seed in the region. Anderson is led by senior All-American candidate Deidra Langston, who was named CVAC Player of the Year and the Daktronics East Region first team. Langston, a 5-foot-10 native of Gainesville, Ga., leads the Lady Trojans in scoring and rebounding at 20.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Keana Boyd (11.9) and Mikala Fogle-Wilson (10.7) also have double-figure scoring averages for the Lady Trojans. California (Pa.), the '04 Division II national champions, enter Friday night's game with a record of 21-9. The Vulcans also have an East Region first-team member in junior forward Kim Nowakowski. Nowakowski, a 6-2 native of Butler, Pa., averages 16.6 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. Anderson is averaging 73.3 points per game and has a scoring margin of plus 9.2. California (Pa.) averages 65.4 points per game is has a scoring margin of plus 3.9. Anderson is 8-4 in its last 12 games. The Lady Trojans lost to Pfeiffer 67-54 in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference championship game on Mar. 3. The Vulcans have won eight of their last 10. They lost to Indiana (Pa.) 63-53 in the championship game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament on Mar. 3. Both teams are shooting 41 percent from the field, and rebounding is about even. Cal averages 42.5 rebounds per game, while Anderson averages 41.5. But Anderson holds a big advantage at the free throw line. The Lady Trojans have made 289 more free throws than the Vulcans this season, and Anderson shoots 75 percent from the line, while Cal shoots 64 percent. Four of the eight teams in the regional are from the CVAC, a record for the conference. Friday's other first-round games are Indiana (Pa.) (22-8) vs. Barton (21-7) at 1 p.m., Pfeiffer (26-4) vs. Pitt-Johnstown (20-7) at 3 p.m., and St. Andrews Presbyterian (20-9) vs. host Glenville State (30-2) at 8 p.m. The winner of the Anderson-Cal game will face the Glenville State-St. Andrews winner Saturday at 8 p.m. The game can be heard on 1280 WANS and viewed at www.cybersportsusa.com
