Longwood Wins 11th Straight, Rips Lady Trojans

FARMVILLE, Va. - Longwood outscored Anderson College by 18 points at the free throw line and dominated the backboards to beat the Lady Trojans 83-57 Monday night at Lancer Hall. Longwood, 20-3 overall and 14-2 in the CVAC, won its 11th straight game. Longwood's last loss to an 85-79 loss at Anderson on Jan. 18. The victory also keeps the Lancers in first place in the CVAC. The loss drops Anderson to 13-10, 10-6. Longwood jumped out to a 26-8 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game and never looked back. Marita Meldere led Longwood with 20 points. Ashley Mason added 17 and Melissa Nafzger chipped in 12 for the Lancers. Nafzger also led Longwood's assault on the glass with a game-high 12 rebounds. Longwood won the backboards, 51-31. Anderson was led by Deanna Thompson with 18 points and Michelle Trewartha with 16 points. A total of 29 personal fouls were called on the Lady Trojans. Decole Shoemate fouled out after 25 minutes, and four other AC players had four fouls when the game ended. Longwood was whistled for just 17 fouls. The Lancers were 30 for 37 from the line, while AC was just 12 of 19. Longwood's 30 made free throws was a season high for an AC opponent and its 37 attempts tied a season high. In 16 CVAC games, AC has been outscored by 66 points at the free throw line. Both teams shot 36 percent from the field. AC committed 23 turnovers to 17 for Longwood, and the Lancers had 13 steals.
