Lady Trojans Gun Down Longwood, 85-79

ANDERSON, S.C. - Leann Segers scored 22 points, including three 3-point baskets in the final 11 minutes, and Decole Shoemate added 20 points and 11 assists to lead Anderson to an 85-79 victory over Longwood in a CVAC women's game Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center. There were 11 ties and 17 lead changes in the game, nine lead changes in the second half, as the two teams battled back and forth. Anderson won its fifth straight and seventh in its last eight games to improve to 8-5 overall and 5-1 in the CVAC. Longwood falls to 9-3, 4-2. Longwood was led by Ashley Mason with 24 points, Marita Meldere with 22 points, and Melissa Nafzger with 17 points. Deanna Thompson had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists and Shemika Reed chipped in 12 points for AC. Both teams came out firing in the first half. Longwood shot 67 percent from the field, while AC shot 54 percent. The largest lead either team had in the first half was eight by Longwood - 40-32 - with 4:23 left. But AC closed the first half with a 14-6 run to tie the game at 46. In the second half, there were nine lead changes and five ties. Longwood seized a 61-55 lead with 11:33 to play, but AC rallied to tie the game at 61. From that point, the largest lead for either team was three points until AC scored the final four points for the six-point margin of victory. The first of Segers' big 3-point goals came at 10:45 and cut Longwood's lead to 61-60. Her second trey at 5:36 tied the game at 71. Her third trey gave AC the lead for good at 79-77 with 1:15 to play. For the game, Segers was 6 for 12 from behind the arc. Longwood dominated the glass, 43-29, but the Lancers suffered 24 turnovers to just 14 for AC. Meldere was the game's top rebounder with 12.
