BREVARD, N.C. - Brevard sophomore Eric Renegar drove a single through the right side of the infield, scoring John Slade from second, as the Tornados edged Anderson, 2-1, in an 11-inning walk-off victory Friday afternoon at Gil Coan Field.

Brevard's Casey Smith (2-3) backed a strong start by Zach Joyce, pitching the final three innings and striking out seven in picking up the win for Brevard as the Tornados improve to 24-20, 14-11 in the conference on the season. Riley McDermott (2-4) suffered the loss for Anderson (13-34, 6-19 SAC), despite a stellar pitching performance by JT Trujillo.

Anderson opened the scoring in the top of the first as Brett Cash led off the game with a walk. Cash swiped second base, but appeared to be stranded as Joyce retired the next two batters on strikes. Erick Sanderson singled home Cash, driving the ball into left field for the first run of the game.

Brevard answered in the bottom of the second as Randy O'Dell and Christian Christopoulos hit back-to-back one-out singles and Renegar drew a walk to load the bases. Kramer Clark followed with the RBI, driving a grounder into the gap between first and second, getting thrown out a first, but allowing O'Dell to cross the plate to even the score. A walk issued to Champ Stuart reloaded the bases, but Trujillo escaped the jam by retiring the final batter on strikes to end the threat and the inning.

Anderson placed runners in scoring position in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings, but Joyce was able to dodge each of the threats to escape with the score intact at one apiece.
Smith relieved for the Tornados in the top of the ninth, setting the Trojans down 1-2-3 in the frame, and Brevard threatened to produce the walk-off win in the bottom of the inning. Brevard placed runners on first and third with two outs, but Kyle Francis retired the BC pinch hitter on strikes to send the game into extra innings.

Brevard again threatened in the 10th as Chad Funkhouser reached on a two-out single to centerfield, taking second on the play. An intentional walk issued to Tarron Robinson brought Cody Queen to the plate, but the BC shortstop flew out to left field to end the inning, sending the teams to the 11th.

Smith again set the Trojans down 1-2-3 and John Slade jumped on the first pitch from McDermott, driving a line drive single into right field. A sacrifice bunt by Christopoulos moved Slade into scoring position before Renegar followed with a bouncer through the right side of the infield. Trojan right fielder Ryan Kirkland came up gunning, firing toward the plate, but the throw drew catcher Brett Scarberry just up the third base line, allowing Slade a lane to get around and slide in just ahead of the tag to end the contest.

Joyce went eight innings for the Tornados in the start, scattering five hits while striking out seven batters in the contest. Trujillo matched the BC freshman, going seven innings, allowing four hits while striking out six.

Brevard and Anderson close out the South Atlantic Conference series tomorrow afternoon at Gil Coan Field. Brevard will recognize the 2012 baseball seniors in a pregame Senior Day ceremony at 11:30 a.m., with first pitch of the doubleheader between the Tornados and the Trojans set to begin at 12 p.m.
