Trojan Baseball Drops Doubleheader at Lincoln Memorial

HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Anderson University baseball team dropped a pair of heartbreaking one-run decisions, 11-10 and 7-6, to Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at a cold and windy Lamar Hennon Field.

Anderson slipped to 4-12 overall and 1-5 in league play with the setbacks, while LMU improved to 7-9 and 4-2.

Game One

The opener saw the Trojans make their way on the board first with a two-run second inning. Erick Sanderson and Paul Como recorded back-to-back singles to lead off the frame and following a strikeout, the Trojans capitalized on a Railsplitter error to plate Sanderson and Como scored on Ryan Kirkland's single in the next at-bat.

Anderson scored three more in the top of the third, highlighted by Brett Scarberry's two-run double, to put the Trojans on top 5-0.

The Railsplitters started to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the third. Curt Fuqua drove home Joseph Horsley, who led off with a single, to put LMU on the board. With runners on second and third, Nick Pressley singled through the left side to send Fuqua home. Gelson Perez scored the final run of the inning as he scored on Andre Rodriguez's fielder's choice.

LMU scored another in the fourth as they capitalized on Neil Borden's leadoff double. Joseph Horsley was able to notch a one-out RBI single to cut the score to 5-4.
In the bottom of the fifth stanza, the Railsplitters grabbed the lead as they took advantage of two AU errors and plated two runs.

After extending their lead to 7-5 in the sixth, LMU broke open the game with a four-run seventh frame. Neil Borden drove in the first run as he sent Andre Rodriguez home with an RBI single. Nick Morabito slapped a single through the left side which plated Borden in the next at-bat. Curt Fuqua capped the scoring with a two-run single which put the Railsplitters on top, 11-5.

Following a scoreless eighth, Lincoln Memorial survived a scare in the top of the ninth as the Trojans mounted five runs on seven hits. With the tying run on second, pitcher Brandon Cowan got out of the inning with a game-ending fly to right field as the Railsplitters held on for an 11-10 victory.

The two teams combined for 29 hits in the contest as the Trojans held the edge, 15-14, in that department.

Brad Pressley picked up the win and moves to 2-1 on the season for Lincoln Memorial. Pressley tossed six innings and allowed eight hits, five earned runs, and struck out two.

Freshman JT Trujillo (1-2) suffered the loss for the Trojans, tossing 3 1/3 innings in relief and giving up seven runs off six hits.

Game Two
Lincoln Memorial 7, Anderson 6

The Railsplitters jumped on top early in the nightcap, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning.

The Trojans cut the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the third as they notched five hits, highlighted by Brett Scarberry's two-run double.

Lincoln Memorial scored again in the bottom of that frame as Brandon Morris drove in Nick Morabito when he lined a double into the left-center gap.

Anderson added a run in the top of the sixth and shut the Railsplitters out in the bottom half of the sixth, making the score 7-4 heading into the seventh. The Trojans rallied for two runs and put the game-tying run on third, but Anderson was unable to capitalize, as the Railsplitters held on for the 7-6 victory.

Austin Johnson picked up his first win of the season as he provided the Railsplitters with 5 1/3 innings.

Sanderson absorbed the loss for the Trojans, giving up seven earned runs off eight hits in six innings.

Freshman Brett cash led the Trojans at the plate, collecting five hits in 10 at-bats, including three doubles, while Erick Sanderson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Paul Como finished the twinbill 4-for-9 with a pair of RBI, with Ryan Kirkland also posting four hits in nine at-bats and garnering two RBI. Sophomore Zack Reeves was 3-for-7 with a double and two RBI on the day.

The Trojans are back in action on Wednesday, as Augusta State invades Memorial Stadium for a 3 p.m. first-pitch.
