CHARLESTON, W. Va. - LaShonda Chiles scored 31 points and had 10 assists and Deidra Langston scored 30 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Anderson University to an 84-72 victory over West Liberty State in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II East Regional Friday afternoon at the Eddie King Gym. Anderson, 27-4 overall, advances to face the winner of the Glenville State-Barton game Saturday at 8 p.m. The loss ends West Liberty's season at 24-7. Friday's victory by Anderson marks the second time in three years the Lady Trojans have beaten West Liberty State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. "It was a great effort by our team," said Anderson head coach Jeff Dow. "West Liberty is a very talented team and they can attack you in many different ways with 3-point shooting and good post play." Anderson shot 58 percent from the field in the second half and steadily pulled away in the final minutes. After a 3-point goal by West Liberty State's Lena Kalvans tied the game at 46 with 13:55 remaining, the Lady Trojans went on a 23-14 run for a 69-60 lead with 6:11 left. Chiles capped the run with a 3-point goal. Chiles made another 3-point goal to answer a basket by Kalvans to put Anderson up 72-62 with 5:18 remaining. Anderson's lead never slipped below double digits again. "You have to give the credit to Anderson," said West Liberty State head coach Lynn Ullom. "Our defense wasn't very good and Anderson took advantage of it. I've been coaching 15 years and Chiles has had two of the best individual performances against us that I've ever seen." In Anderson's two tournament games against West Liberty State, Chiles, a 5-2 junior from Greenwood, S.C., has scored a total of 63 points. She scored 32 against the Hilltoppers on Mar. 12, 2004 at California, Pa. "Dee Dee playing well inside helped us a lot on the perimeter," Chiles said. "We fed off each other." In the second half, Chiles scored 19 points and Langston scored 18. "I wanted to post up stronger in the second half," Langston said. "In the first half, I was falling away from my shot. In the second half, I went up stronger and either got fouled or got a good look." Chiles was 13-for-27 from the field and 4-for-10 from behind the arc. Langston, a 5-10 junior from Gainesville, Ga., was 13-for-20 from the field, 8-for-10 in the second half. West Liberty State was led by Charity Street with 19 points, Renee Farina with 17 points, and Kalvans with 14 points and 13 rebounds. The Hilltoppers, the top 3-point shooting team in the country, were 10-for-31 from behind the arc. "We did a good job in the second half of limiting them to one shot," Dow said. "We talk about creating offense off of our defense - D to O. We got a number of transition opportunities in the second half." Anderson finished the game at 50 percent from the field, while West Liberty State shot 44 percent. The Lady Trojans committed just seven turnovers, which ties a season low. Anderson committed just seven turnovers against Belmont Abbey on Jan. 30. Anderson is 4-2 all-time in the NCAA Tournament and 4-0 when it scores 80 or more points. At Charleston, W.Va.
